The Korean-Chinese Interaction in the Regime of Hipergamy

Hipergamia, the capital of Jeju Island in South Korea is a cultural hub with an abundance of activities and cultural events. Many foreigners visit Hipergamy during their visit to Korea. The Hipersan district was the first settlement on Jeju Island, and was the first ethnic Korean settlement. Since its inception, thousands of people from different regions of Korea and neighboring regions have immigrated to settle in the Hipersan area.

}During the time of Japanese rule in Korea, many Koreans in the Hipersan area left for Japan and eventually established the Yeokswonkido ( Koreans' Ward) Village in Pusan, which later became the first Jeju-Doan ( Korean-ondo) Village. A group of Koreans who left to form the Uprising League also came to Jeju and established the Yeokswonkido School. The aim of these groups was to unite the people of their region under one cause. They envisioned a unified Korean nation by uniting their cultural differences and establishing an ethnic unity through propaganda. In reality, many regions within Korea today are ethnically diverse and culturally one.
Hipergamy came into being as Koreans' response to the Japanese occupation. Many Koreans were either displaced from their native areas or killed in the war. Many left their ancestral homes to live in the townships and cities with Japanese.

Many Chinese who settled in Korea fled to Japan and established the Jeju-do ( Koreans' ward) Village in Pusan, which later became the first Jeju-do ( Koreans' neighborhood) in Pusan. The influx of Chinese gave birth to the culture of Shuri-do (open city) or Baek-dong (open country) - one of the four traditional pillars of traditional Korea. Most north Koreans would be of the Dong-joo (Dong-joo-seong), which is one of the four accepted school dialects of Korea. This was created through the initiative of the north Korean government, through its textbooks, and its textbooks were revised by South Korean fathers. The term today is commonly referred to as Skosu-jung ( Seoul-style), indicating that it was adopted by the north Korean government and also by the Seoul-style culture.

Most scholars say that there are two distinct forms of Skosu-jung. One is named Manjurabedul-jung (manual of north Korean language) and the other is named Manjung-nok (school of south Korean language). According to these school, there is only one standard language in north Korea, while the other has two - Manjurabedul-jung and Manjung-nok. Skosu-jung is a creation of Koreans who wanted to make their language standardized across the country. But most linguists and classification experts do not agree with this view.

In the past several decades, there have been a lot of changes in the education system in Korea, particularly in schools for kids. Some analysts believe that this is the main reason for the recent surge of interest in Korean language learning for the young people. The new curriculum, based on the International Joint Commission of Education for Students (IJC ESCO) and the United States Department of State's tripartite agreement on Korean language proficiency, is said to be a reason for the recent surge of interest in Hipergamy. The new curriculum, according to them, makes it easier for students from disadvantaged background to learn Korean, and at the same time, they become more proficient with their spoken Korean. This is why many parents encourage their children to learn Korean at an early age.

Besides its role as the primary language used between Koreans and Japanese, Hipergamy has also been a significant factor in the evolution of the Korean language as a written form. According to researchers, the transition from oral to written Korean was facilitated by the gradual acclimification of oral Korean into a spoken form, which happened after the diffusion of Korean settlers into south korea. As the Korean language became more fluent, Korean writing developed and eventually reached the stage that it is today. This marked the beginning of the Korean Empire, and thereafter, the transition to an integrated, globally-oriented society was initiated.

At present, Hipergamy continues to play a decisive role in the preservation of cultural minority life in China, a country where the practice of arranged marriage is banned and where social pressure is prevalent for women to stay home to their families. Not only has Hipergamy contributed to the betterment of China's current stage of development as a nation, but it has also helped to maintain a sense of cultural identity for the Chinese who consider themselves Korean by blood and cannot easily adapt to the regime of the Chinese communist government.

Indeed, the association between Hipergamy and the Korean people goes back to the very beginnings of the Republic. During the years of martial rule, Korean Americans were forcibly removed from their home and placed in internment camps, and they remained in these camps for a number of years under conditions that critics compare to slavery.
